Constructing Disabled Friendly Library

Empowering Youth for Enlightening Society (EYES) is newly formed organization organizing sports and cultural programs from time to time exclusively for the blind, of the blind and by the blind and giving positive message to reflect the potentiality of the visually impaired people in the communities. Also, it has taken broad vision of establishing audio library since its inception due to the non-availability of braille materials for the students in Nepal by providing recorded study materials in Mp3, CD format and audio cassettes to the blind students. Through this project more than 100 school and college going students will be directly benefited each year. And due to the inadequate job-oriented training facilities for the educated blind persons in Nepal, from the beginning this organization has planned to sponsor blind students to enroll in the institutions to attain the skillful training for their financial independence. EYES envisions to install a Braille library and collect precious books from various national and international libraries, impart computer knowledge application training, type writing and braille script for the benefit of the blind students. Such type of program has never been planned by any voluntary organization or state government before.

We are much determined to initiate these activities with new initiatives for a long period. Through all above activities thousands of visually impaired will be directly or indirectly benefited each year.

In this globalized world of technology which has witnessed a significant expansion of educational opportunities for the blind and as the result of which the number of blind boys & girls in developed countries has got opportunity to obtain their school and college education with adequate resources in braille it is regrettable that, thousands of visually impaired students are neglected in the field of education in Nepal due to lack up of real opportunities as general people. So, progresses in the field of education vary less than the able bodied. As a result, the blind youngsters have failed to keep pace with the accelerated tempo of educational activity. That’s why, we are making relentless effort to resolve this problem through the organization. Despite the article 31 of the Nepal constitution 2072 which says in it sub article (3) that the citizens with disabilities and the economically indigent citizens shall have the right to get free higher education in accordance with law and in sub article (4) that the visually impaired citizens shall have the right to get free education through brail script and the citizens with hearing or speaking impairment, to get free education through sign language, in accordance with law is though included in constitution lacks lots in behavioral practice. No wonder that, these young blind people get driven into the extremes of desperation, and despondency, often bursting out into act of apparent as well overt aggression and restlessness. Yet the blind school throughout province-2 are not impacting the traditional education in English medium and also not providing such facilities as available in other state of Nepal. Due to lack of quality education the visually impaired students of this state cannot compete with others in the national level for pursuing higher education and getting employment opportunity. As a result, the literacy rate of the visually impaired children is very low in comparison to their normal counterparts. Sight by sight the number of unemployed visually impaired youth is going up day by day. The said project will be able to fulfill the dreams of thousands of visually impaired children by availing them enough opportunity through western mode of Education.

The primary emphasis is to enable visually impaired students and empower them by providing sufficient learning materials in braille in different forms to each student and fulfill the gap of resources in order to improve their quality of learning and make them competent.

Major Activities:

1. Train the students in braille education with modern assistive technological devices

2. Train the students in computer and other allied activities.

3. Teacher-guided instruction in self-contained classroom.
